5 Signs Your Geyser Needs Replacing (Before It Fails Completely)

Most geysers give you clear warning signs before they fail. Spotting them early saves money — and avoids the cold-shower panic on a winter morning.

1. Age Over 10 Years

The average lifespan of a South African geyser is 8–12 years. Once yours passes the decade mark, efficiency drops and failure risk rises sharply — even if it seems to be working fine. A proactive replacement beats an emergency replacement every time.

2. Rusty or Discoloured Hot Water

Brown or rust-tinted hot water is a red flag. It means the inside of your tank is corroding. Corrosion spreads to your pipes and once it takes hold, replacement is almost always the only lasting fix.

3. Strange Noises — Banging, Popping or Rumbling

A healthy geyser runs quietly. Banging or rumbling sounds are caused by mineral scale building up on the heating element. Heavy scaling kills efficiency and is usually followed by element failure within weeks.

4. Water Pooling Around the Base

Any moisture around or beneath your geyser deserves immediate attention. Even a slow drip from a failing pressure valve or corroded tank can turn into a serious flood without warning. If you see water — call a plumber the same day.

5. Inconsistent Water Temperature

Water that takes longer to heat up than it used to, or fluctuates unpredictably between hot and lukewarm, points to a failing thermostat or element. It’s often repairable — but can also indicate the tank itself is nearing the end of its life.

What Should You Do?

If you’re seeing one or more of these signs, don’t wait for a full failure. A planned replacement is far cheaper — and far less stressful — than an emergency call-out at midnight.
